The EU register of authorised novel foods, specifying conditions of use and labelling requirements.
The Union List is established by Regulation (EU) 2017/2470 and contains all novel foods authorised for placing on the EU market. For each entry, the list specifies the authorised novel food, the conditions under which it may be used (including food categories and maximum levels), any additional specific labelling requirements, and other conditions such as post-market monitoring.
The Union List replaced the individual Member State authorisations that existed under the previous regulation (EC) No 258/97. It is maintained and updated by the European Commission through implementing acts, based on EFSA's scientific opinions.
An applicant whose novel food receives a favourable opinion from EFSA and is subsequently authorised by the Commission will see their product added to the Union List. Data protection may apply for a period of five years from the date of authorisation, during which the authorisation is limited to the original applicant.
The current Union List can be consulted online through the European Commission's website.
